The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. The canvas was previously folded to reduce the portrait to a half-length size. It has since been unfolded to it's orignal dimensions, the fold lines are visible. There is a fine pattern of craquelure to the face. There is an old varnish that carries some dirt. Examination under UV light reveals restoration and retouching associated with the folds. There is some retouching to the reds of the cape. There is a cloudy varnish that precludes a more in depth examination. The painterly approach to the composition remains fully appreciable. The paint is stable.
